Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly evolved from a futuristic concept into a practical tool that is transforming occupations worldwide, including policing. AI currently has novelty, excitement, and even fear associated with it. However, it is conceivable that, in the near future, AI could be integrated across the entire career of a police employee—from recruitment and training to eventual use in virtually every aspect of one’s work.

The applications discussed represent real-world examples where AI is already helping to modernize policing. Examining real-world utilization provides insights and a potential roadmap for how the police profession can continue to ethically and effectively integrate AI into policing. Technology will never replace empathetic, critically thinking, trained professionals, but it can offer tools that help good people do even better work.
