Highway Safety Initiative: An Enhanced Statewide Approach to Commercial Motor Vehicle Traffic Safety

After attending the Large Truck and Bus Educational and Strategic Planning Forum hosted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in collaboration with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in January 2015, members of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) Traffic Safety Committee recognized the need for a systemic change in the way Illinois law enforcement addresses traffic violations committed by commercial motor vehicles. During that meeting, it was clear that the FMCSA was committed to making progress in this area and wished to have members of the IACP’s Division of State Associations of Chiefs of Police (SACOP) develop an awareness campaign focusing on large truck and bus traffic enforcement. Based on the information presented by the FMCSA, the ILACP Traffic Committee recommended an increase in the level of engagement by street officers. Shortly after attending the session, the ILACP, in partnership with the Illinois Truck Enforcement Association (ITEA) and Illinois State Police (ISP) collaborated with the FMCSA to develop and implement an enhanced, statewide approach to traffic safety as it relates to commercial motor vehicles. This approach includes the identification of commercial motor vehicle traffic enforcement as a priority in 2015, the statewide delivery of the FMCSA’s Large Truck and Bus Traffic Enforcement Training through the use of local law enforcement trainers, collaboration with the state’s trucking associations, and a commitment by Illinois law enforcement to participate in the 2015 Safe Driver Week in October. It is through these measures that Illinois law enforcement hopes to have an appreciable impact on the safety of the state’s roadways.
