IACP Working for You

In the mission to support the law enforcement leaders of today and develop the leaders of tomorrow, the IACP is constantly involved in advocacy, programs, research, and initiatives related to cutting-edge issues. This column keeps you up to date on IACP’s work to support our members and the field of law enforcement.

Critical Issue Dashboards

Law enforcement leaders face the challenge of having to speak to a variety of different audiences—their communities, the media, and elected officials—on a daily basis and, sometimes, on difficult issues. To aid you in your communications, the IACP has developed a series of dashboards to address 10 key issue areas. A centerpiece of these dashboards are messaging worksheets that provide key talking points and facts to assist you in your daily communications. In addition to the messaging worksheets, we have consolidated IACP’s resources relating to these 10 topics to provide you with a clearinghouse of the most up-to-date resources available, including model policies, guides, reports, legislative initiatives, and more. Access to these resources is limited to IACP members.

Moving forward, the IACP will continue to build out these resources and the list of critical topics will grow as new challenges arise. Visit the IACP’s critical issues webpage and leverage these dashboards to enhance your daily communications on critical issues.

Developing Trust Between Law Enforcement and Communities of Color

The IACP, along with the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), has developed the IACP COPS Office Bridging the Trust Gap Between Law Enforcement and Communities of Color Toolkit. The toolkit includes examples of initiatives by law enforcement agencies to build and maintain community trust; critical tasks and responsibilities for executive-level officers, frontline officers, and community stakeholders; sample community surveys; and resources that are integral to the continuum of trust building. The Critical Tasks and Responsibilities section of the toolkit will be designed and printed for distribution at the 2016 IACP Conference.

The toolkit will be available online in fall 2016. For more information, please contact Rosemary DeMenno.
