The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Divisions of State and Provincial Police (S&P) and State Associations of Chiefs of Police (SACOP), working collaboratively with the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), through a cooperative agreement with the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), have joined forces to support the National Law Enforcement Challenge (NLEC) program. The program emphasizes three traffic safety priorities: occupant protection, impaired driving, and speeding.

Since 1992, the NLEC has evaluated thousands of traffic safety programs. Hundreds of law enforcement agencies have been recognized for implementing truly innovative and effective traffic law enforcement programs. By accepting the challenge, these agencies, through their willingness to participate in this program, have chosen to share their strategies and enforcement activities with others in an effort to reduce the number of deaths and injuries that result from traffic crashes each year. While the NLEC focuses on priority traffic safety programs, other activities are considered when appropriate to address relevant innovative traffic safety concerns specific to individual jurisdictions.
