The Brief: Telling Policing’s Story

Critical Dispatch Podcast

This past year, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) took another step in assisting the policing profession by launching a podcast, titled Critical Dispatch. This podcast, intended for police and anyone interested in policing, gives the profession a platform to tell its story. As many news stories unfold around the profession, the perspective of the police can often be left untold. Through developing a platform on which police can share their stories, the IACP aims to resolve misconceptions around the policing profession and demystify the operations of police agencies, not solely for IACP members, but for the wider audience of the public, especially during media-driven incidents.

Critical Dispatch officially launched in September 2024 when Jeff Pegues, a journalist, author, and former CBS News correspondent, joined as the host. A longtime collaborator with the IACP, Pegues has worked with the association on media segments, moderated panels at IACP conferences, and interviewed IACP Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer Terrence Cunningham in his book, Black and Blue: Inside the Divide Between the Police and Black America. As host of Critical Dispatch, he delves into policing challenges and articulates the voice of policing.
