In October, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the formation of a task force to help provide guidance on the registration of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) weighing less than 55 pounds. The IACP was invited to participate as one of the 25 task force stakeholder members.
This task force was formed due to the increase in UAS incidents that pose public safety risks, including the sighting of drones near aircrafts and flying near places of large gatherings such as stadiums. In March 2015, IACP then-president Richard Beary testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight and Management Efficiency on the potential threats of UAS and the need for guidance and best practices for law enforcement mitigation of UAS dangers.
