A few years ago, a friend of mine received a purple heart for an injury received in the line of duty. During a tense standoff, his job was to hold the perimeter with another deputy as resources were being deployed. A simple enough assignment for this experienced deputy, except this was an icy, snowy day in January in Idaho.
