Civil Traffic Agents Protect Colombian Roads

Bogota’s Transition from Police to Civilian Traffic Enforcement

A traffic officer is a familiar sight in many countries, and traffic enforcement is a common role for many police personnel. However, in Colombia, the enforcement of traffic laws can be carried out not only by the Colombian National Police (CNP) but also by civil trafficking agents who are under the mayor’s office in each city. In both cases, the law dictates training requirements to fulfill this important task. In the case of the CNP, the training takes place at the National School of Road Safety (ESEVI) where police officers who will be assigned to traffic enforcement spend one calendar year attending expert-led training that covers different subjects across four major areas: road safety, traffic crashes, the Colombian traffic-related legal framework, and humanities.
