Embedded Police Social Workers

In March 2019, the Bloomington, Indiana, Police Department (BPD) hired its first police social worker (PSW), and the addition of the position is changing the way services are provided to the Bloomington community. The city of Bloomington has a population of around 85,000 people, and BPD has 105 sworn officers. As with many other law enforcement agencies, there always seems to be more calls than officers, and many of those calls have more to do with mental health or social services than the actual enforcement of laws or fighting crime.
