For more than 120 years, the IACP has served as a leader in the law enforcement profession, striving each day to provide law enforcement professionals around the world with the skills, knowledge, and tools they need to perform their jobs effectively, efficiently, and safely.

IACP’s vision is to serve the leaders of today and develop the leaders of tomorrow. Today, we serve our more than 25,000 members in 125 countries through advocacy, training, research, professional services, and enhanced communication and collaboration through various specialized forums, including the IACP Annual Conference and Exposition. IACP continues to launch historically acclaimed programs, conduct groundbreaking research, and speak out on important law enforcement issues.

I encourage each one of you to read IACP’s 2015 Annual Report to get a sense of what was accomplished and produced by the association for our members over the past year. You can view the annual report by visiting www.iacp.org/About-US.

The reports, trainings, initiatives, outreach, and advocacy we have done and produced on behalf of law enforcement and to aid you in the difficult jobs you do every day could not have been accomplished without our members’ assistance and constant feedback. It is only from having law enforcement executives’ work together, share information, and learn from the experience of others that we can protect our communities from crime and violence and ensure that our officers remain safe on the job.

I encourage, you, as a member of the IACP, to remain updated, connected, and more involved with the day-to-day activities of the IACP by utilizing the resource efforts we have in place for you.

IACP News is a bi-weekly electronic newsletter emailed to all IACP members. IACP News contains the latest information on upcoming IACP events, emerging issues of importance to the law enforcement community, information on IACP awards programs, the latest law enforcement job opportunities, and more.

The IACP Blog (www.theiacpblog.org) is updated several times per week and contains detailed information on pressing issues facing law enforcement and important resources, various events, meetings, and announcements from the IACP. In 2016, we are also instituting a monthly theme into our blogs where we will have a series of blog posts related to a particular topic. For example, in January, we had blog posts on domestic violence, and in February, we included blog posts on homeland security issues.

IACP Twitter feed (@TheIACP) provides the latest daily information on issues of importance to the law enforcement community. It is also the quickest way to keep up to speed with new announcements from the IACP such as the release of new reports, upcoming meetings, registration deadlines, and so forth.

The IACP Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TheIACP) showcases meetings and events in which the staff and members are participants. This allows you to see firsthand the work of the association on your behalf.

Through these various outlets and through the Police Chief magazine, the IACP is demonstrating its commitment to keeping our members connected and informed about the efforts that the IACP makes on behalf of its membership on a daily basis.

However, if we are to be truly successful in our efforts, we need your involvement. That is why I urge you to get more involved with the IACP and to encourage your peers to do the same.

There are a variety of opportunities for membership involvement. For example, members can participate in IACP’s various committees and sections. The IACP relies on our committees for a tremendous amount of work. They serve as our subject matter experts on a number of issues that are critical to both the association and the law enforcement profession as a whole.

In addition to IACP committees, IACP sections offer another avenue for membership participation. While IACP committees are usually focused on a specific topic and have a limited membership, IACP sections have a much broader focus and are designed to allow all members with an interest in a certain aspect of law enforcement to participate. The full listing of sections can also be found on the IACP website at www.theiacp.org/-sections.

Another way you can get involved is by helping us develop the leaders of tomorrow by sponsoring a new member. In April, I will be kicking off the 2016 President’s Membership Drive. While we encourage you to sponsor new officers, students, up-and-comers, and all of your emerging leaders as members of the IACP throughout the year, the annual President’s Drive is a great way for you to be rewarded for doing so. As part of the drive, you will have the opportunity to be rewarded for your efforts with great benefits like free conference registration.

I close by thanking you for your active participation and support of the IACP. Your participation is what makes us a success in providing a unified voice for the law enforcement community. Your active membership allows IACP to serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas and best practices among law enforcement leaders around the world. ♦
