Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), also known as drones, have captured the world’s attention. The development of UAS technology has been astounding in its pace and proliferation. The Consumer Technology Association forecasts 2016 sales of 1 million drones in the United States alone, more than twice the number just two years earlier. To date, more than half a million people have registered their UAS with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Since the FAA introduced its web-based registration system in December 2015, the number of UAS registered online has now surpassed the total number of manned aircraft registered in the United States.Drones present numerous opportunities, ranging from flying a UAS in the backyard to critical infrastructure inspection, from real estate photography to wildfire monitoring.
