Efforts to Protect Police Officers' Mental Health
Although the law enforcement profession can be rewarding, it also produces a great amount of mental and physical stress on an officer’s body.
Studies have shown that police officers have higher rates of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) when compared to populations of similar age.1 Nationally, this leads to a 69 percent increased risk of suicide over the general working population.2 This is largely due to an officer’s significant exposure to a variety of both chronic and acute stressors.
