Focus on Officer Wellness: Particulate Protection for First Responders
Using eN95 Masks to Filter Out Coronavirus and Wildfire Particles
As COVID-19 has spread in the communities they protect and serve, police officers are experiencing the adverse effects of the virus, as well. Recent examples of climbing infection rates among first responders have appeared in San Francisco, California; Chicago, Illinois; and St. Paul, Minnesota, as well as in 911 call centers in Puerto Rico and Broward County, Florida. During the same time, wildfires across the West Coast have released toxic aerosols (particulate matter) into the air that are typically not blocked effectively by cloth masks or air filters in cars and buildings. N95 masks are known to reliably block these aerosols because they form an airtight seal around the mouth and nose and use electrostatically charged material to filter out more than 95 percent of the tiny particles.
