Lighting the Fire Within
Culturally Responsive Policing
The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service is a small agency delivering policing services to six First Nation communities on and around Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. The organization has a total of 45 employees, which includes 24 sworn officers (inclusive of the chief of police). Due to the small size and increased demands, the organization is required to be innovative in its delivery of services and programming in order to deliver culturally responsive policing services to its communities.
To meet that need, the organization sought funding to deliver an innovative, first-of-its-kind program for a police service, called the Lighting the Fire Within (LTFW) project. The project is funded through Women and Gender Equality Canada.
