The benefits of participating in a formal mentoring program can include better job performance, more rapid advancement, and higher job and career satisfaction, resulting in reduced turnover. Formal mentoring opportunities can be implemented at all levels within a department. New chiefs can even participate in executive-level mentoring to aid in confidence building, leadership development, and an increased likelihood of their success as chiefs.
