According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 2006 was a deadly year for law enforcement vehicular crashes. Thirty-six officers died as a result of automobile crashes, and an additional eight officers died from motorcycle crashes. Death numbers like these require gut-wrenching self-examinations from those who have the power to make changes, and, in 2007, the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) assembled a group of law enforcement administrators, trainers, risk management personnel, researchers, fleet managers, and traffic safety experts to find answers to the question, “How can we reduce the number of law enforcement officers killed and injured in traffic crashes nationwide?”
