Research in Brief: Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Minors in Juvenile Justice

The commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking of minors is a serious social and legal issue that impacts the lives of children throughout the United States and across the world. Research suggests that children and adolescents who are trafficked experience lifelong consequences. The violence and abuse they experience can seriously curtail normal child and adolescent psychological, emotional, and social development and behavior. Yet, crimes of this type are particularly difficult to prevent, identify, confront, and solve. There are no exact figures that show the extent to which children are sexually exploited for commercial purposes or trafficked in the United States. Nonetheless, even without perfect estimates, we know it is a crime that cuts across all types of public and private sectors, communities, and systems. It is a crime that many people—private citizens, professionals, and law enforcement officers—confront each day.
