Research in Brief: Developing “Right-Size Research”
Supporting Evidence-Based Decision-Making in Police Agencies of All Sizes
Every day, police officers make decisions that significantly impact the lives of others and, sometimes, their own lives. Policing involves consequential, potentially life-or-death decisions, and at an organizational level, it is a resource-intensive public service that demands accountability. When framed in this light, it seems obvious that the critical decisions that police officers and leaders make every day should be based on the best possible evidence about what works in policing. Most would agree that the policing profession should be guided by research evidence that demonstrates the most effective, efficient, and equitable approaches to reduce harm and promote public safety.
