Research in Brief: Variations of Body-Worn Camera Activations

Increasingly, police departments around the globe are requiring their officers to wear body-worn cameras (BWCs) and while research has been conducted on the impact those cameras have, there has been very little research on whether officers actually activate their cameras and in what settings. There are three possible explanations for when officers do not activate their BWCs: (1) they simply forgot, (2) they intentionally decided not to activate, or (3) they did not have time to activate the BWC due to the circumstances of the encounter. Whatever the reason, low activation levels could counteract the potential benefits of a BWC program.
