Research in Brief: Body-Worn Cameras – Command-Level Attitudes After Implementation

Body-worn cameras (BWCs) have rapidly become a standard piece of equipment in many law enforcement agencies. While proponents and early implementers relied on a couple of small-scale studies that lauded a variety of positive benefits, researchers have worked aggressively over the past few years to evaluate these claims. As summarized in the December 2018 edition of this column, Dr. Cynthia Lum and her colleagues demonstrate that the accumulating research has thus far been somewhat mixed, and perhaps the “anticipated effects from BWCs have been overestimated.” Nevertheless, as that article concluded, there is still much work to be done to fully understand the role BWCs will play in law enforcement. As such, it is critical that researchers continue to explore this issue in a way that helps inform law enforcement leaders.
