Law enforcement in every jurisdiction is alarmed by the growing magnitude of firearms that are being reported stolen, reaching approximately 380,000 per year in the United States. According to data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), during the four-year period from 2012 to 2015, nearly half a billion dollars’ worth of guns were stolen from individuals across the United States, amounting to an estimated 1.2 million guns. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has also reported that 22,000 guns were stolen from gun stores during this same period. This equates to a gun stolen in the United States every two minutes. The increase in thefts and the quickness at which stolen firearms are trafficked after the thefts provide criminals and other prohibited persons easy and uncontrolled access to many weapons.
