With 1.1 million law enforcement personnel scattered across more than 12,000 local police departments and 3,000 sheriffs’ offices in the United States alone, one must wonder if everything possible is being done to protect those who protect their communities. Threats against judges, peace officers, court officials, and witnesses are now occurring with greater frequency, as police stations and courthouses are visited by a growing number of people, many of whom are agitated or in distress.
