Several factors resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to a dramatic increase in traffic fatalities around the world.

Specifically, decreases in travel and congestion have given way to increases in speeding, with many agencies reporting twice the number of violators traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour (161 kilometers per hour). Health factors and social distancing also resulted in reduced enforcement and education efforts related to traffic safety.
