Policing has significantly evolved in recent years. However, the increase in threats to elected officials and concern over politically motivated violence has uniquely impacted the leaders of capitol police organizations.
Leading police agencies is challenging in an environment where highly polarizing and divisive issues are addressed; the public comes to exercise their First Amendment rights; and, more recently, election-related controversies have come to the forefront. Added to the unique structure, duties, and dynamics of each agency saddled with security and law enforcement responsibilities at a state or nation’s capitol, e.g., the U.S. Capitol, leaders are faced with a limited number of peers to rely on for support.
Because of this, the IACP Capitol Police Section is increasing engagement with its members to create a group whose knowledge and experiences can be relied upon to help section members navigate challenging issues.
