When preparing for and responding to mass demonstration events, law enforcement can be tasked with many responsibilities. Police executives may have to juggle responding to media, updating city or state leadership, gathering intelligence, communicating with organizers of the demonstration (as well as outside groups and influencers), and ensuring the health and wellness of the officers and the community. During these especially challenging times, the ability of police leaders to prepare for, respond to, and successfully manage demonstrations is more critical than ever.
To ensure that law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources needed to efficiently prepare for and respond to these events, the IACP presents the Mass Demonstration Rapid Response Team (MDRRT), a service of the Collaborative Reform Initiative Technical Assistance Center led by the IACP and partnering organizations with support from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The MDRRT provides no-cost, individualized technical assistance (TA) to state, local, territorial, campus, and tribal law enforcement agencies to help them with problem-solving and maximizing communication with their community when facing a mass demonstration event.
