Drivers impaired by alcohol and other drugs have been, and continue to be, a major highway and public safety problem. In 2021, there were 42,939 traffic fatalities, the most in any year since 2005. Of those crashes, 13,384 or 31 percent involved a driver with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.
