Traffic Safety Initiatives: The Pedestrian Problem in Maryland

How an Effective Enforcement Program Is Saving Lives

In 2018, in Maryland, 131 pedestrians lost their lives as a result of a motor vehicle crash.1 Of those fatalities, about 20 percent were in Baltimore County.2

When any five-year trend was considered, Baltimore County was always among the top five jurisdictions in pedestrian injury crashes and pedestrian fatalities. As one of 24 jurisdictions in Maryland, Baltimore County accounted for over 14 percent of pedestrian injury crashes and 17.7 percent of pedestrian fatalities in the state over five years.3
