Traffic Safety Initiatives: Strategies for Prevention

Working Together to Solve a Public Health Crisis

Police know firsthand about the dismal safety record of U.S. roadways, especially the skyrocketing death and injury toll in recent years. It compels an immediate need for discussion and action.

In 2021, nearly 43,000 people were killed in motor vehicle–related crashes and an additional 2.5 million were injured. Initial estimates for 2022 and the beginning of 2023 remain historically high. This crisis directly affects the policing community, who respond to crash scenes and deliver the news to families, among other related responsibilities. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, from 2013 to 2023, 83 officers died after being struck by vehicles, and an additional 119 died because of vehicular assault.
