Leadership training and development are important for the success of all law enforcement organizations and their respective members. That stated, leadership development is especially crucial for first-line supervisors (the sergeant rank in most organizations) as they have the largest circle of influence in organizations. They set the tone for the officers who interact with the public on a daily basis, and they are often the faces of their organizations, more so than those in higher ranks, including chiefs.
This article will elaborate on why leadership training is crucial for first-line supervisors, especially in today’s climate; discuss three concepts of leadership that are vitally important for first-line supervisors to know, understand, and apply correctly in order to succeed; and explain how first-line supervisors can use the concepts discussed to create an environment that supports and positively motivates people, develops exemplary followers, and helps the organization attain its mission.
