Diaz, Chief of Police, Seattle Police Department, WA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Chief Diaz<\/em>: Addressing real and perceived occupational culture in policing is one of the most important but difficult challenges for any chief. In 2022, leveraging community partnerships and data, Seattle, Washington, Police Department launched two initiatives that show promise in bridging divides that often lie at the core of police culture. Our Before the Badge program, grounded in principles of relational policing and wellness, brings recruits together in honest dialogue with Seattle\u2019s diverse communities to provide a foundation for personal and professional success. Our Equity, Accountability, and Quality analytics program analyzes real-time outcome disparities, over\/under-policing, and quality of service. In approaching our response, the most significant act was rethinking how we respond as an organization to the many calls for change. While we may want to move quickly to implement recommendations and turn the page, it has been crucial to recognize that there is no quick fix, to commit to long-term action to strengthen the foundations of the organization, and to acknowledge that this process does not have an end. Rather, it is about creating the conditions to ensure we are constantly evolving, questioning, and growing and making change part of our regular business. It starts with investing in our incumbent officers\u2014supporting their physical and mental wellness, providing room for professional growth, recognizing good police work, opening channels of communication, and providing the tools and training necessary for their jobs. To complement this, FCPD recently overhauled our recruiting, hiring, and retention practices to align with the expectations of our officers, our community, and our applicants. Providing transparency is also an essential factor of cultural change. Many departments focus on external transparency, which helps build and maintain community trust.
