Increasing representation is one way to empower women. As a leader, my main priority is to understand my team members\u2014their aspirations, skills, and obstacles. Once I build trust with them, I ensure that they have access to all the necessary tools, training, and support needed for them to excel at their job. I trust them to make decisions and create a culture of growth where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning and improvement. As we enter 2024, that landscape is changing. Women are becoming highly recruited for policing positions, including executive leadership. This is a result of the important role that women play and the value they bring to the policing profession. Women are now supported and encouraged by national initiatives, such as the 30&#215;30 Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>I am an active mentor, empowering women to become strong, confident leaders and giving them effective tools to enhance a long, robust career. I encourage women to pursue diverse work experiences that develop inherent strengths but also allow them to push boundaries in areas of needed growth. As a leader, it\u2019s important that I open doors of opportunities for professional and sworn staff. As these doors open, it is each woman\u2019s responsibility to prepare themselves to be the most qualified candidate when they enter. I will open the door, but they must walk through it having done all the hard work and preparation. I am always available to provide guidance, advice, and expertise. I am often a sounding board for female officers who wish to speak about their own experiences. Most importantly, I remind women to be advocates for each other. Most of the time, that competition is created by the department\u2019s antiquated philosophy that patrol squads and specialty units can\u2019t have too many women in one place. As I\u2019ve moved up through the ranks, it\u2019s clear that overcoming that odd dynamic to mentor other women is paramount to empowering women in the workplace. Mentoring includes listening, sharing your own successes and mistakes, as well as championing each other.
